How We Source Our Mushrooms: Cultivation, Extraction, and Why It Matters
Most supplement brands in India don’t know where their mushrooms come from. They buy standardised extract from a bulk supplier, put it in a bottle, and write “premium quality” on the label.
We took a different path — and understanding why requires going back to where Shroom Actives actually started.
Where It Began: Learning to Grow
Before Shroom Actives existed as a brand, our co-founder Dann spent time on the cultivation side of functional mushrooms — learning the production process from the ground up. Not as an investor or a marketer, but hands-on: understanding substrate composition, fruiting conditions, contamination risks, harvest timing, and what separates a high-potency batch from a mediocre one.
This wasn’t the typical entrepreneur’s path of identifying a market opportunity and outsourcing the product. It was the opposite — starting from the raw material and working forward to understand what a genuinely good product would require.
What became clear early on: the functional mushroom supply chain in India is poorly understood by most of the brands selling in it. The difference between a high-beta-glucan fruiting body extract and a starch-heavy mycelium-on-grain product is invisible to someone who hasn’t seen what both look like at the source. Most Indian brands — and many global ones — don’t know the difference because they’ve never needed to.
The ICAR Connection
Shroom Actives was built with technology transfer from ICAR — the Indian Council of Agricultural Research — India’s premier agricultural research institution. ICAR has conducted significant research into functional mushroom cultivation, extraction methodology, and bioactive compound optimisation.
Working with ICAR-developed cultivation protocols meant building on research designed for Indian growing conditions, Indian substrate availability, and Indian quality standards — not adapting imported cultivation methods that weren’t optimised for our environment.
For consumers, this means the mushrooms in Shroom Actives products aren’t imported from China or grown on grain in a factory somewhere. They’re cultivated in India, under protocols developed by Indian agricultural scientists, from strains optimised for the bioactive profiles that matter.
Why Fruiting Body Only
The decision to use exclusively fruiting body extraction wasn’t a marketing choice. It came directly from cultivation experience.
When you’ve grown mushrooms and seen the difference between the fruiting body and the mycelial mass, the quality gap is obvious. The fruiting body — the actual mushroom — is where the organism concentrates its bioactive compounds. The mycelium, particularly when grown on grain substrate in commercial settings, is primarily a growth medium interaction — you’re getting grain starch with some fungal biomass mixed in.
Brands that use mycelium-on-grain often do so because it’s cheaper and faster to produce. Fruiting body cultivation requires more time, more controlled conditions, and more expertise. The cost difference is real. We decided the quality difference made it non-negotiable.
The Supply Chain We Built
Every batch of Shroom Actives products traces back to:
- Indian cultivation — mushrooms grown in India under ICAR-informed protocols, not imported bulk extract from overseas suppliers of unknown origin
- Fruiting body harvest — harvested at optimal maturity for maximum bioactive concentration
- Dual extraction (where relevant) — water extraction for beta-glucans, alcohol extraction for triterpenes in Reishi, to capture the full spectrum of bioactives
- Third-party testing — every batch tested by an independent NABL-accredited laboratory before it goes into a bottle
This isn’t a complex supply chain by global standards. But by Indian functional mushroom standards, it’s unusually transparent and controlled.
What We Found That Bothered Us
Building the supply chain for Shroom Actives involved looking closely at what other brands in the Indian market were actually selling. What we found was consistent with what international supplement testing organisations have documented: a large proportion of mushroom supplements on the Indian market contain significantly less beta-glucan than claimed, and many don’t specify their source at all.
Some are selling what appears to be mushroom powder — ground dried mushroom without extraction — as if it were equivalent to a concentrated extract. Some are importing bulk extract from overseas suppliers with no visibility into the cultivation conditions or testing history. Some are using the word “extract” on labels for products that are primarily mycelium on grain.
This matters for consumers because the efficacy difference is real. If you take a 500mg capsule that’s mostly grain starch, you’re not getting the cognitive or immunological effects the research documents. You’re getting grain starch with trace amounts of fungal material.
Why India, Why Now
The timing for building a transparent functional mushroom brand in India is deliberate. The category is early-stage — most Indian consumers are just discovering these products. The standards being set now will define what “quality” means in this category for years.
We believe India has the agricultural capacity, the scientific infrastructure (ICAR, research institutions), and the traditional knowledge base (centuries of medicinal mushroom use in Ayurvedic and folk traditions) to build a world-class functional mushroom industry. We don’t need to import these products from abroad — we can grow, extract, and test them here, to standards as high as anywhere in the world.
Shroom Actives is one piece of that. There are other good brands working toward similar standards. The more of us there are, the better the category gets for everyone.
The Long View
Our long-term vision extends beyond supplements. The functional mushroom RTD (ready-to-drink) beverage category is essentially nonexistent in India despite growing significantly in global markets. We see a future where functional mushrooms are as mainstream in India as protein supplements are today — and where the quality standards are set from the beginning rather than retrofitted after the market matures.
That starts with being honest about what’s in the bottle. It starts with showing our work. It starts with building a supply chain we’re not embarrassed to describe in detail.
